Cookie Dough Dip Recipe

I’ve been enjoying cookie dough dip for as long as I can remember. I have always thought that while delicious, the classic recipe for cookie dough dip was seriously lacking in actual cookie dough flavor.

I’ve been testing my recipe for edible cookie dough over the summer and it occurred to me, why am I not using some of these same ingredients in my cookie dough dip? After a few test runs, my friends and family agreed, this version of cookie dough dip is hands down far superior to anything we’ve had before.

BEST Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Dip

There are a few key ingredients in this recipe that give this cookie dough dip it’s authentic cookie dough flavor:

  • baking soda – while we’re not baking this dip, you’d be surprised at what a small of baking soda can do in terms of adding flavor to this dip.
  • granulated and brown sugars – many recipes just use brown sugar because it dissolves easier but I think that adding both not only makes the dip taste more delicious but the slight grittiness of the granulated sugar adds authenticity.
  • flour – adds texture and stability to this dip and is heat treated so it’s safe to consume.

Now that we’re talking about cookie dough dip, how about checking out these baked cookie favorites:

  2. Ritz S’mores Cookies
  3. Chocolate Crinkle Cookies
  4. Kolaczki (Polish Cookies)
  5. Cookie Empanadas
  6. Peanut Butter Blossoms

Cookie Dough Dip Ingredients

If you make cookies regularly, you’ll likely have most, if not all of the cookie dough dip ingredients on hand. As always, you can find the full printable recipe with complete instructions in the recipe card at the end of this post. Let’s take a look at what you’ll need…

  • all purpose flour – the flour is heat treated in the microwave making it safe to eat. It adds texture and stability to the dip.
  • cream cheese – softened cream cheese is the base of this dip and makes it extra creamy and delicious.
  • unsalted butter – softened butter adds authentic buttery flavor to this dip.
  • brown sugar – you can use dark brown or light brown sugar in this recipe.
  • granulated sugar – I think the addition of granulated sugar adds not only sweetness but that slight texture to the dip that makes it taste more like legitimate cooke dough.
  • vanilla extract – an essential flavor.
  • baking soda – while this is optional, I think it’s crucial for the flavor. It’s not “needed” because this dip isn’t being baked but I definitely notice when I leave it out.
  • finely ground sea salt – really enhances the other flavors in this dip and balances the sweetness.
  • mini chocolate chips – I prefer mini chocolate chips because when the dip is stored in the refrigerator, the chocolate chips get really hard. Mini chocolate chips are just the right size.

Let’s Talk About Dippers

There is no wrong way to enjoy this cookie dough dip! Whether you opt for a spoon or go a more traditional route, this dip is insanely delicious and pairs so perfectly with many dippers. Here are a few of our favorite options:

  • graham crackers – honey or chocolate graham crackers would be good here.
  • vanilla wafers – pretty sturdy and taste so good with the dip!
  • fresh fruit – I like to throw down a variety such as strawberries, apples and cherries.
  • pretzels – sticks, traditional, pretzel chips, chocolate dipped pretzels – all good!
  • broken waffle cones – cups or bowl or use what’s left at the bottom of your package.

How To Make Cookie Dough Dip

This is really a simple recipe to make and I’m going to break down the steps for you here:

Heat the Flour.

  1. Heat the flour by placing in a microwave safe dish and heat in 15 second increments at 50% power until the flour reaches 160°F or higher.
  2. Let the flour cool completely. Sift the flour after it’s cooled to remove any lumps.

Make the Dip

  1. Beat the cream cheese and butter in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
  2. Mix in the brown sugar, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, baking soda and salt.
  3. Stir in the sifted flour and finally the mini chocolate chips.

Serve or Store.

  1. This dip is ready to be enjoyed right away OR…
  2. Cover and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
  3. Serve with your favorite dippers.

Storage Information

This dip should be stored in an airtight container, or tightly covered, in the refrigerator. The dip will be good for 3 to 4 days.

After several hours in the refrigerator, the dip will firm up a bit so you may want to allow for 10 minutes or so for the dip to sit at room temperature to soften. This cream cheese cookie dough dip should not be frozen.

FAQs

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers!

Can I use regular chocolate chips?

You can but keep in mind that when refrigerated, they get very hard so you will likely want to set the dip out for 15 minutes or more to let them soften a bit.

Is this dip really okay to eat since it’s made with flour?

Yes! We are heating the flour in the microwave until it reaches 160°F or higher which makes it safe to enjoy. It’s actually no longer consider “raw” flour because we basically cook it in the microwave.

What can I add to this dip besides chocolate chips?

Anything you might add to your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe: nuts, peanut butter chips, white chocolate chips, raisins, etc.

Trish’s Tips and Tricks

  • Treat this cookie dough dip just like you would your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe. Feel fry to add in different flavored chips, raisins, dried cranberries, nuts, etc. to really make it your own.
  • While some of the ingredients such as the flour and the baking soda might seem extraneous, they really are essential in this cookie dough dip recipe so please don’t leave them out.
  • This dip only gets better with time as the flavors have a chance to meld. Ideally, I like to make this a few hours before serving.
