Caprese is one of my favorite salads so we made these Caprese Skewers! This bright and flavorful combo of tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil is dressed with a simple olive oil and balsamic glaze. These Caprese Salad skewers can be served as is or finished with some croutons, chilli flakes and more balsamic! Video included!

There’s something about these simple ingredients that’s pure magic! I make this Caprese Salad video with homemade croutons all summer long and it’s a super popular recipe on my site. Another example of pure simplicity is my grandpa’s Tomato Salad which is a Turkish version of the Caprese. It uses tomatoes, feta, toasted bread chunks and fresh oregano. Why Caprese Skewers

While Caprese Salad is lovely as it is on a large salad plate, taking the same ingredients and making skewers is another experience! Here’s why:

  • They’re easier to serve
  • Each skewer is a full caprese experience with all flavors combined–unlike a platter where you can get more of one ingredient.
  • You can make the skewers ahead of time
  • Caprese skewers are easier to transport so it’s an ideal option for BBQ, picnic, pool parties or any potluck
  • The skewers can be dressed last minute with as little as salt and pepper and olive oil.
  • Or you can also drizzle balsamic glaze.
  • To have the croutons experience with the Caprese skewers–I love crumbling some homemade croutons over the skewers.
  • My family loves having the balsamic glaze on the side so you can dip the caprese skewer if you’re in the mood for blasamic.
  • If you’re in a super fancy mood, drizzle a thin layer of my Basil Pesto right over the skewers.

Caprese Skewers Ingredients

Similar to any caprese salad, you’ll need:

  • Fresh Mozzarella. I use Bocconcini here as they’re perfectly round in shape and fit easily in a skewer.
  • Baby Tomatoes –similar in size to the cheese
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • You can also use Basil Pesto if you absolutely have no access to basil.
  • homemade croutons 
  • Quality olive oil ( I use Mina Moroccan Olive Oil)
  • Balsamic Glaze
  • Salt, pepper and chilli flakes

Make Caprese Salad Skewers

First of all, you’ll need to gather the skewers. I use medium size bamboo skewers here– About 6 inches. I feel these are best for a decent serving of Caprese.

Start by skewering the ingredients. Aways have a fresh basil leaf between the ingredients. Here I started with tomatoes, then basil.

Continuing to skewer the salad, now go in with the fresh mozzarella and another basil leaf. At that point, you will be repeating the layers.

The full skewer will look like this–layers of bocconcini, basil, tomatoes on repeat.

When plated, you’ll be seasoning the caprese skewers with salt, pepper and chilli flakes (optional) and then you can choose how to dress it from below.

Dressing for Caprese Skewers Recipe

As beautifully simple as this salad is, it can also be made a touch more extravagant with a few touches.

I’ve found that some people love their Caprese salad pure and simple tomato, cheese and basil with a touch of salt and olive oil. So if you’re one of those people, I suggest you add a small bowl of Balsamic glaze or vinegar on the side and use it for dipping!

Dipping the Caprese skewers in balsamic is such a fun experience, plus it gives you full control over how heavy or light you want to dress up your Caprese salad. So I highly recommend this serving option.

Now, if you’re like and want a full on experience for your salad–then here’s how I love to eat them. I love a light drizzle of balsamic glaze and a nice pinch of chilli flakes. Plus lots of olive oil and some torn basil leaves.

I also make my homemade stove top garlic croutns (because they’re MUCH easier than the oven ones). I then crumble the croutons over the skewers.

Tips for Caprese Salad Skewers

  • Use heavy Bamboo skewers for the recipe so that the salad doesn’t fall apart from the skewer.
  • It’s best to use a medium size (no more than 6inch) skewer again so the Caprese ingredients stay firm on the skewer.
  • Any fresh mozzarella works for the Caprese salad, however I find the bocconcini to be ideal as it’s comparable to the tomatoes.
  • Baby tomatoes–cherry or grape tomatoes are best since they’re round.
  • When alternating between cheese and tomatoes, make sure to have a basil leave between each layer.
  • Make the Caprese Salad skewers up to 2 days ahead of time and keep them covered on a serving plate in the fridge. Avoid seasoning them yet.
  • On the day of serving, season and dress the skewers.
  • The simplest seasoning for the Caprese salad would be salt, pepper and olive oil.
  • It’s recommended to have a small bowl of balsamic glaze on the side for dipping the skewers in.
  • You can add chilli flakes if you want a hint of spice.
  • To take your Caprese Skewers to another level, crumble some croutons on top, drizzle lightly with balsamic glaze and drench them in good olive oil.

Caprese Skewers

Caprese is one of my favorite salads so we made these Caprese Skewers! This bright and flavorful combo of tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil is dressed with a simple olive oil and balsamic glaze.

Ingredients

Caprese Salad

  • 2
    cups
    baby tomatoes
  • 2
    cups
    Bocconcini cheese
  • 1
    cup
    Fresh basil leaves

Caprese Salad Dressing

  • 1/4
    teaspoon
    salt and pepper
  • 1/2
    cup
    Moroccan olive oil
  • 1/4
    cup
    balsamic syrup or balsamic vinegar
  • 1
    pinch
    Chilli flakes
  • 1/2
    cup
    Garlic Croutons
    homemade or store bought
  • 1/4
    cup
    basil leaves
    torn

Instructions

  1. Prepare your bamboo skewers. It’s best to use 6 inch, thick bamboo skewers. Avid using the thin ones, or skewers that are too long since the salad will not hold on well.

  2. Start by skewering the one tomato followed by a basil leaf folded in half.

  3. Add a piece of bocconcini cheese also followed by a basil leaf.

  4. Continue with another piece of tomato, a basil leaf, another piece of bocconcini cheese to finish off the skewer.

  5. Repeat with the bamboo sticks and arrange the Caprese skewers on a platter.

  6. Season lightly with salt and then a good olive oil drizzle.

  7. You can finish off with some chilli flakes if you like or skip the spice.

  8. Have a bowl of balsamic vinegar on the side for dipping the skewers to your taste.

  9. Or up your game by drizzling the balsamic glaze over the skewers and crumbling the croutons over the skewers.

  10. Serve right away and enjoy!
