When it comes to restaurants, there’s nothing quite as satisfying as finding a hidden gem.
In Peterborough, there are dozens of eateries tucked away that rarely get the recognition they deserve.
Whether you’re in the mood for hearty Italian cuisine, an exquisite curry or something more exotic, there’s a whole host of places to choose from once lockdown rules allow it.
You can also head for your traditional Saturday morning fry-up or a delicious Sunday roast.
While we can’t visit them at the moment due to the coronavirus restrictions, here are the six restaurants you simply must head to when it’s safe to do so.
1. Sunny Cafe
This place is a step above your basic greasy spoon breakfast eatery.
After reviewing it in our hunt for the best breakfast in Cambridgeshire, it ranked pretty high up on the list.
The warm welcome, excellent service, and top-notch fry-up for a decent price make it a force to be reckoned with when it comes to breakfast in Cambridgeshire.
And it’s not just us who rave about it.
On TripAdvisor, the cafe has an impressive five out of five, with people calling it “amazing”.
“While in the area recently we decided on some food, we came across this place by accident, it was great. Good menu, good breakfast, friendly staff,” one reviewer said.
2. House of Feasts
There’s no way we could do a round-up of Peterborough restaurants without including this incredible eatery.
House of Feasts has been listed in countless food guides, with owner Damian Wawrzyniak being named a UK Top 10 Food Pioneer by BBC Good Food.
From delicious homemade bread to incredible main courses, House of Feasts is a hidden gem that not many people in the city know about.
However, those who do know love the place, with one reviewer saying “we were super impressed with our lunch date at House of Feasts.
“The staff were super friendly and attentive.
“The atmosphere was perfect for lunch: light-hearted, fun and quick!”

3. Gurkha Lounge
Based in the Hampton area, this Nepalese and Indian restaurant is the first of its kind in the area.
TripAdvisor reviewers are raving about it, with five out of five ratings and one diner saying: “Every element of the menu was a masterpiece”.
The luxurious interior makes you feel like you could be in a fancy London restaurant – definitely worth a visit!
4. Tonino’s Pizzeria
Tonino’s has a way of transporting you from the wet and gloomy British weather into a warm and cosy Italian restaurant.
Reviewers on TripAdvisor agree, with one person saying: “Our favourite local restaurant.
“The food has always been top-notch and cooked fresh. With an open kitchen, customers can watch the chef do his thing.
“Such a cosy atmosphere and impeccable service.”
Another person described the restaurant as a “hidden gem in a sleepy old market town”.
If you’re in the area then it’s well worth a visit for some incredible Italian comfort food.
5. Bombay Brasserie
If you’re craving a curry in Peterborough then there’s nowhere that compares to Bombay Brasserie.
Based on Broadway in the heart of the city, the service is always impeccable, with friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Fresh white tablecloths and a warm atmosphere make you feel at home, all while the tasty food gives an authentic taste of Indian cuisine.
Reviewers on TripAdvisor agree, with one saying: “The food was outstanding, full of flavour and the staff were friendly and helpful as usual.”
With the owner regularly coming round to speak to diners, there’s a feeling that you are at home there and a truly valued customer.

6. Mattoni
This small Italian doesn’t only do pizza and pasta, but steak and chicken, and some divine starters.
The restaurant is small and very popular so it can be tricky to get a table, but it’s well worth the wait.
Others agree, with one person saying after their first lockdown meal out in August last year: “It was amazing food and service outstanding, and completely COVID safe.
“I felt safe and had a lovely family birthday meal.
“If you haven’t been there then please give it a try – you will not be disappointed.
“Will return to the best Italian in the Peterborough area and we travel 12 miles to get there – so worth it.”
